Nordic Beech floor for historic music hall

The historic Aberdeen Music Hall has been restored and redeveloped by architects BDP. The Category A listed concert hall has been completely refurbished and now includes a performance studio, creative learning space and a café/bar.

Nearly 1,500m2 of our solid Nordic Beech Classic flooring has been fitted as part of the transformation, including in the impressive 1,300 seat auditorium, which now has step-free access to all levels. Nordic Beech with its white pigmented finish offers a light and bright backdrop to the interior and makes the most of the new architectural lighting by reflecting an abundance of light.

By specifying the same floor for much of the building, the various spaces are seamlessly connected by a unifying element. At 140mm wide, Junckers’ signature wide board, long-length floor boards really come into their own in the open spaces and circulation routes, offering a clean and elegant look. Solid beech is amongst the most hard-wearing timbers used for flooring and our pre-finished floors are well-known for their durability.

The flooring contractor was West End Flooring.

A Floor Restored – Junckers Lacquer Renews Embassy Floors

Next month, we’re working with The Danish Embassy in the UK and the Trade Council of Denmark to celebrate Denmark’s strong design heritage at London Design Fair.

From 20-23 September, our hexagonal parquet floor Hexparket by CarpEnter Cph & Hartmann will form the backdrop to the ‘Danish Living Room’, a curated showcase of iconic brands and promising new talent from Denmark.

A few years ago, our professional lacquer was used to restore the floor at the Danish Embassy in London to its former glory. The existing solid wood floor in the expansive apartments was sanded back then refinished with four coats of our water-based lacquer, adding an elegant, subtle sheen to the wood as well as hard-wearing, long-lasting protection. A rare peak into this beautiful home in London.

Bespoke Parquet Floor Created to Replicate Original Gallery Flooring

Our solid oak Herringbone parquet flooring has been installed at the National Gallery of Ireland as part of extensive refurbishment works. Architects Henegan Peng’s brief to provide a more accessible route through the collections has resulted in an elegant and historically sensitive upgrade for the Gallery.

The solid wood parquet floor in the Dargan and Milltown Wings was installed by DJ Kelly & Co Ltd. The new floor in the Milltown Wing replaced an original timber floor and in the Dargan Wing, Junckers created a bespoke wood block to replicate the pattern of the original tiled floor.

Herringbone parquet floors, historically found in country estates, castles and mansion houses, have become one of our most popular floors. The elegant aesthetic of the geometric pattern coupled with the naturally occurring structural grain pattern found in solid oak has made parquet the flooring of choice for anything from public buildings, bars and restaurants, galleries and offices to private homes. Our solid oak floors are very durable and can be sanded and refinished several times. Simply put – they last a lifetime.

EFA to Change Set Specification for PSBP2

Phase one of the Government’s £4.4 billion Priority School Building Programme (PSBP), to rebuild and refurbish school buildings in the worst conditions across the UK, is well under way with the final school due to open at the end of 2017. The second phase, encompassing 277 schools, will start later this year.

An essential part of the scheme is to rebuild and refurbish the sports facilities of the identified schools. The Education Funding Agency (EFA) sets a recommended specification for rebuilds and refurbishments. For sports flooring, the EFA specified Point Elastic Floors for PBSP1, phase one of the programme. Following studies and further research, the EFA no longer uphold their specification recommendations for sports flooring and the specification will change to Area Elastic Floors, having identified Point Elastic Floors as inadequate.

Since PSB1 was launched the EFA has amended its position on which sports floors fall within their acceptable design criteria. Although solid wood sports floors have always been regarded as a high quality choice, they have previously thought to be too expensive. In the past year, Junckers’ Technical Department has worked closely with the EFA to show how a solid hardwood sports floors will provide a safe, high performing floors with unbeatable lifecycle costs that will indeed fall within, and in some areas exceed the EFA’s requirements. This has resulted in the EFA changing their design standards for PSBP2.

A Junckers solid hardwood sports floor is one of the most durable surfaces available for multi purpose sports use. All Junckers’ sports floors comply with EN 14904 with a choice of Category A3 and A4 systems. The A4 classification in fact exceeds the EFA’s minimum performance requirement. The lifecycle cost of a Junckers floor is second to none; can be sanded and re-finished eight to ten times during its life. With 12-year intervals between sandings, a typical lifespan of 60 years will comfortably be exceeded, a claim that probably no other type of sports floor can match. Compared with a typical 15-year life of a synthetic or “engineered” floor there really is no comparison in terms of life cycle cost. Taking advantage of Junckers’ Approved Contractors maintenance scheme ensures periodic inspections of the floor are made. The client will also receive regular advice on care and cleaning using Junckers’ comprehensive range of high quality, professional maintenance products. This will keep the floor in optimum condition throughout its life.

A hardwood floor is one of the most environmentally friendly sports floor finishes you could hope to find. All Junckers’ timber is from properly managed forests with FSC and PEFC chain of custody certification. Timber is harvested from old, established forest areas, which are constantly replanted. Junckers floors are BREEAM A+ rated in the BRE Green Guide and have EMAS 111 and ISO 14001 Environmental Management Certification. In addition, Junckers’ products have low (E1) formaldehyde emissions under EN 14342. All Junckers floors are carbon neutral and at the end of their lives they are very easy to recycle, in contrast to materials made from fossil fuels.

Having the facility to use retractable seating in a school sports hall can make a substantial difference to hosting events, competitions or using the hall as a hire facility to the wider community. Junckers’ flooring systems are perfectly suited for use with retractable seating; hundreds of examples in the UK alone are testament to this fact. Junckers floors can be strengthened in a simple way to cope perfectly with very high seating loads, whilst leaving the sprung quality of the floor unaffected. A solid hardwood floor will not be marked or damaged by the wheels, and surface “tracking” or rucking, commonly seen with synthetic surfaces, is non-existent with a Junckers floor.

A safe, high performing sports floor with the right environmental accreditations and unbeatable lifecycle costs which falls within the EFA’s guidelines and the criteria for Affordable Sports Floors set by Sport England – a Junckers sports floor is hard to beat.

Natural, Matt Solid Wood Floors for Danish Design House

Danish design house Republic of Fritz Hansen has chosen Junckers Oak Boulevard for its HQ showroom. The company’s classic designs are now displayed against a backdrop of Junckers’ widest dimension floorboard, measuring 185mm wide made in solid oak.

The many world famous classic pieces and contemporary designs made in collaboration with leading international designers sit perfectly on Junckers’ signature long-length planks, which add a further architectural dimension to the space. Finished with our newly reformulated UltraMatt Lacquer, the floor has a completely natural, matt appearance which looks just like an oiled finish. Developed in response to the growing trend for natural, ‘unfinished’ looking floors, Junckers UltraMatt Lacquer protects the solid wood floor, making it durable, hardwearing and easy to care for. Even though it looks just like an oiled finish with no surface sheen, the new lacquer gives the floor superior protection against spills and scuffs. The natural, matt appearance combined with a highly durable, easy to clean surface has made UltraMatt Lacquer Junckers’ best selling finishing product – over 80% of all pre-finished floors are sealed with it.

All Junckers pre-finished floorboards are now available with UltraMatt Lacquer, ready for immediate use once installed. The new formula enhances the natural beauty of the various timbers Junckers offers, including oak, ash, black oak and beech. Junckers specialises in long-length planks – the true mark of a high quality floor, and its floors are suitable for use over under floor heating. UltraMatt Lacquer can also be bought as a finishing treatment for all types of timber.

A Contemporary Parquet Floor

Over 6500m2 of our Oak Boulevard has been installed in the impressive Aeroville shopping centre near Charles de Gaulle airport outside Paris, France. The €350 million project is a mixed-use retail and entertainment hub with over 200 stores, five cinemas and multiple restaurants.

With an expected footfall over up to 12 million people a year, a hard-wearing, extremely durable floor was a non-negotiable requirement. Our Oak Boulevard, a premium, solid hardwood floor with a stave width of 185mm, was laid in alternating patterns originally inspired by an African design, as an over-sized parquet floor. We think you’ll agree the effect is just stunning. Glued down on concrete, sanded and finished on site with a UV resistant lacquer, the floor adds warmth and elegance to the expansive atrium-style walkways at the same time as offering the required durability.
